No Skips Game
Gold star experts say…
As part of a conversation with Akash Tharani, creator of No Skips Game (a fun and engaging conversation card game) and a DEI practitioner, we asked: What impact do you hope No Skips has for those who play it?
My intention with No Skips was to create a game that was inclusive to everyone and could be customized depending on the situation. I tried to eliminate those subtle moments of exclusion and language that may cater towards one community versus another (for example, using 'partner' instead of 'boyfriend' or 'girlfriend'). Hence the name, a game that requires "no skips" and is accessible to all.
How can companies and individuals continue prioritizing DEI?
These last few years, many companies increased their investment and commitment to DEI; however, we're seeing a bit of a reversal lately as DEI comes under scrutiny in our current political climate. I think companies need to reflect on their company's needs at the moment and pivot if needed to ensure that the work prioritizes the most impactful work, has clear outcomes that can be measured and shared, and presents a strong case on "the why." At the end of the day, DEI is culture work. Simplifying our language and approach may help to connect the dots on the importance of this work and how it benefits everyone in the organization.
For fun, we picked a card from No Skips: What is "Your Song" right now?
I love a good throwback so I'm always down for some 90s R&B (Toni Braxton is a personal fave), but right now I'm also loving some of the tracks on Ariana Grande's new album. I'll go with 'the boy is mine' as the current track I have on repeat.
What nonprofit organization do you support and want others to know about, too?
I've recently gotten involved with SAGE, which provides advocacy and services for LGBTQ elders. They have a few locations across NYC that build community to those who laid the foundation for a lot of the advancements we've seen in our society today around inclusion and belonging for LGBTQ people. It's been a joy to meet and learn from the members of the SAGE Harlem community. Visit SAGE to learn more.
