Ahead of National Hispanic Heritage Month and the new Amazon Prime series Strange Love premiere, we conducted a Q&A with the show's creator, Jorge Xolalpa.
Can you tell us briefly about your career background and what inspired you to create STRANGELOVE: The Series?
I've been making films since 2016, when I did my first feature film, "Blue Line Station," with an iPhone and a budget of $100. Ever since I've made a total of 9 feature films, and now, my first series is STRANGELOVE. Strangelove was inspired by the lack of diversity and representation. As an undocumented queer individual and having the power to create my own content, I found it rather important to tell my story from my point of view as each character has something of me in them.
How would you describe STRANGELOVE for someone who has not seen the trailer?
Different, unique, original. Strangelove, although it is being compared as a queer version of "Sex in the City" or a Latinx "Looking," neither of those shows have actually showcased lives as uniquely as we have.
Why is this an important story to tell for the Latinx LGBTQIA+ community?
Because we don't have many stories out there and the ones we have glorify stereotypes.
If someone isn't LGBTQIA+ or Latinx, why should they tune in to this new series?
Just because someone is not LGBTQIA+ doesn't mean that they don't know someone who is, so I would say give Strangelove a chance. You might learn something you've always wanted to know.
Is there anything else you want our readers to know about you, STRANGELOVE, or what else you have coming up?
Watch Strangelove and support indie filmmakers! Come to our premiere at The TCL Chinese Theater on 9/12 at 6PM :)
STRANGELOVE: The Series premieres on Amazon Prime & YouTube on September 18.
